Elaeagnus makes a lovely modern hedge and one I would like to see planted more frequently. Mid green evergreen leaves with a silvery sheen. It’s special trick is to produce masses of inconspicuous but beautifully scented flowers in Autumn. We recommend the form xEbbingei in it’s plain green incarnation. There are variegated forms but they do tend to revert. Best for hedges 1.5 to 2m tall, which is about the height of the one in the main photograph here. It is generally pretty tough and tolerant of a wide range of conditions.
