Hosta Sparkling Burgundy has steadily gone up in my estimation. It is a good performer, making a dense, deep green medium sized clump. Which sounds fairly boring………but…… In July strong, thick, vertical flower scapes start to appear, with a chunky flower bud atop each one. These scapes and buds are dark greenish purple, something barely hinted at by the leaves. When the buds open the pale pinky lavender flowers are placed radially round the scape, and contrast beautifully with the darkness of the rest of the plant, in fact they really do sparkle! Among enthusiasts I am a well known exponent of green Hostas, and varieties as good as Sparkling Burgundy are the reason.
